How to Choose Your Skateboard Deck Size
Why Deck Size Matters
Your skateboard deck is the foundation of your entire setup. Get the width right and everything — flip tricks, grinds, stability — feels dialed. Get it wrong and you'll be fighting your board every session.
Deck Width: The Most Important Number
Deck width is measured in inches across the widest point. Here's a general guide based on shoe size and riding style:
- 7.0"- 7.25" - Mini for the little ones. More proportional to their size.
- 7.5" - 7.75" - Kids and smaller riders (shoe size up to Men's 7). Great for technical street skating.
- 8.0" - 8.5" - The most popular range. Works for most street and park skaters of any skill level.
- 8.5" and up - Best for vert, pools, and cruising. Prioritizes stability over flip speed.
Deck Length and Wheelbase
Most decks run 31"–32.5" in length. The wheelbase — the distance between the truck mounting holes — affects how snappy or mellow your turns feel. Shorter wheelbase = tighter, quicker turns. Longer = more stability at speed.
Deck Shape: Concave and Kick
Beyond the numbers, pay attention to the shape:
- Concave — The curve across the width of the board. Deeper concave locks your feet in for flip tricks. Mellower concave feels more comfortable for long sessions.
- Kick — The upward curve at nose and tail. Steep kick = snappier ollies. Mellow kick = smoother, more forgiving.
Construction: 7-Ply Maple is the Standard
Almost every quality street and park deck is made from 7 plies of North American maple pressed together. This gives the best balance of pop, durability, and weight. Some brands use specialty veneers or epoxy resin — these can add stiffness and longevity at a higher price.
Brand vs. Brand
The good news: most decks from reputable skate brands are excellent. Don't overthink the graphics — focus on width and construction. Brands like Powell Peralta, Santa Cruz, Real, Baker, and Anti-Hero all press quality wood.
